About scientific activity
Throughout its history, the Institute has made a significant contribution to the development of mathematical science and has established itself as a major center for training highly qualified personnel for the Republic. The journey of the Institute's community vividly reflects the development process of mathematical science in Uzbekistan.
Initially, under the name of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics, the institute conducted research not only in mathematics but also in mechanics, theoretical geophysics, seismology, and computing technology. Subsequently, the Institutes of Mechanics and Seismic Stability of Structures, Cybernetics, and Seismology spun off as independent institutions.
In different periods, the Institute of Mathematics was led by:
-
Prof. N.N. Nazarov (1943-1947)
-
Prof. V.A. Djodjio (1947-1950)
-
Acad. V.I. Romanovskiy (1950-1952)
-
Acad. V.A. Bugayev (1952-1957)
-
Acad. S.X. Sirojiddinov (1957-1960 and 1962-1967)
-
Corresponding Member V.I. Gubin (1960-1962)
-
Acad. M.S. Saloxitdinov (1967-1985)
-
Acad. T.J. Jo‘rayev (1985-1992 and 1997-2003)
-
Prof. B.B. Rixsiyev (2003-2004)
-
Acad. Sh.A. Ayupov (1992-1997 and from 2004 to the present)
In 1954, the institute was named after V.I. Romanovskiy, the founder of the Uzbek mathematical scientific school.
The prominent scientific schools of probability theory and mathematical statistics, functional analysis and algebra, and differential equations, established through the efforts of V.I. Romanovskiy, T.A. Sarimsoqov, S.X. Sirojiddinov, M.S. Saloxitdinov, and T.J. Jo‘rayev, have gained recognition from the global mathematical community. Today, these scientific schools continue their activities under the leadership of academicians Sh.A. Ayupov, A. Azamov, Sh.A. Alimov, Sh.K. Formanov, and J. Khojiyev.
Over the years, the institute's scientists have been awarded various State Prizes for their effective work. Notably, the scientific research of the Institute's staff has been awarded the State Prize of Uzbekistan 5 times. This includes the first-degree State Prize in science and technology awarded in 2017 to the director of the institute, Academician Sh.A. Ayupov, and his students—K. Kudayberganov, B. Omirov, and U. Rozikov—for their fundamental research on "The Development of the Theory of Non-associative Algebras, Derivations, and Nonlinear Dynamical Systems." In 2017, Academician M.S. Salohiddinov was awarded the "Fidokorona xizmatlari uchun" ("For Selfless Service") order. In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated August 24, 2021, Sh.A. Ayupov was awarded the title of "O‘zbekiston Qahramoni" (Hero of Uzbekistan) and the highest distinction—the "Oltin Yulduz" (Gold Star) medal. By the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan in 2023, Academician Abdulla Azamov was awarded the honorary title of "Honored Scientist of the Republic of Uzbekistan."
The institute's doctoral students J.A. Karimov (2018), S.K. Shoyimardonov (2022), and Z.S. Boxonovlar (2023) were awarded the State Scholarship of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and doctoral student Sh. Shopo‘latov (2019) was awarded the "Mard o‘g‘lon" (Brave Son) State Prize.
Academicians Sh.A. Ayupov and U.A. Rozikov, and professors B.A. Omirov and F. Mukhamedov were elected as Fellows of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), and 6 of our mathematicians became members of the TWAS Young Affiliates Network. In 2020, Prof. U.A. Rozikov received an International Award from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in the "Best Scientific Article" category. Furthermore, our mathematicians have been recognized as "Top researcher in Natural sciences" in the "Springer Nature Top Author" and "Scopus Award" competitions.
Over the last 5 years, more than 50 Doctors of Philosophy (PhD) and more than 25 Doctors of Science (DSc) have been trained at the institute.
The development of the Institute was greatly influenced by the Resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan No. PQ-4387, dated July 9, 2019, "On measures for state support for the further development of mathematical education and sciences, as well as the radical improvement of the activities of the V.I. Romanovskiy Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan," and Resolution No. PQ-4708, dated May 7, 2020, "On measures to improve the quality of education and develop scientific research in the field of mathematics."
As a result of these resolutions, the institute's new building was completed in 2020. Additionally, regional divisions of the institute were established in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, and in the Bukhara, Namangan, Samarkand, and Khorezm regions, with all necessary conditions created for scientific research.
In his Address to the Oliy Majlis in January 2020, the Head of our State designated the year as a year for the development of mathematics, chemistry, biology, and geology.
On June 12, 2020, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan.
The President acquainted himself with the facilities created here. The new building houses 8 scientific laboratories and a "Young Mathematicians" Center. Its comfortable floors feature an information resource center and seminar rooms, offices for academics and researchers, a library, a conference hall, and a canteen. The rooms are equipped with the most advanced technology and equipment.
"This modern institute should be a center of enlightenment for all scientists. Mathematics opens the way to many sciences. It is no coincidence that we built it in the 'Students' Town.' This institute must ensure a link between education and science and create a foundation for our country's development," said Shavkat Mirziyoyev during his visit.
At a meeting with scientists on May 31, 2020, the Head of State emphasized the need to form a mathematical mindset starting from kindergarten. Based on this, a system was established at the Institute of Mathematics to coordinate textbooks for preschool, school, and higher education institutions. Additionally, a Laboratory for the Coordination of Mathematics Education, with a staff of 5, was established within the Institute.
Furthermore, as a result of the aforementioned Presidential Resolutions, the following opportunities were created for our scientists:
-
In 2020, the Institute was granted autonomy in awarding academic degrees.
-
A Fund for the Support and Development of Mathematical Science and Education was established. The Fund currently operates based on its Charter.
-
The Academician T.A. Sarimsoqov Scholarship was established for students and researchers in the field of mathematics, financed by the Fund.
